Our Mission
Our mission is to conduct surveillance, investigation, prevention, education and control activities to prevent outbreaks and the spread of communicable diseases in the community.
Our Services
- Conduct surveillance, investigation, prevention, education and control activities to reduce the spread of communicable/infectious diseases.
- Notifiable conditions reports are received 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- Collect, analyze, interpret and monitor disease occurrence in the population.
- Provide statistical data on reportable conditions.
- Provide consultative services to healthcare providers, educational institutions and citizens upon request.
- Coordinate prophylaxis treatment and refer susceptible disease contacts for treatment.
Case Investigation and Infection Control
Each case of infectious disease is promptly investigated to determine the cause. Immediately following the investigation, appropriate control measures are established to prevent the spread of infection. All case reporting and records are confidential.
Texas Public Health Information Network(TxPHIN)
The Northeast Texas Public Health District utilizes the new Texas Public Health Information Network (TxPHIN). The network allows for rapid distribution of health alerts, dissemination of prevention guidelines, distance learning, national disease surveillance and many other functions vital to safeguarding our community against health issues.
Reporting
Why?
- Reporting is required by Texas Law (Texas Health and Safety Code Chapters 81, 84 and 87).
- Reporting alerts authorities to potential Public Health Emergencies.
- Reporting helps to protect the public against contagious and possible life threatening diseases.
Who?
- Health Care Professionals including Physicians, Veterinarians, Dentists, Nurses, Emergency medical service personnel and Health Officials of a Correctional Institution.
- School/Daycare Authorities
- Clinical Laboratories
- Administrators of Long Term/Temporary Care Facilities
- Parent/Guardian

In addition to these conditions, any outbreaks, exotic diseases and unusual group expressions of disease must be reported. All diseases shall be reported by name, age, sex, race/ethnicity, DOB, address, telephone number, disease, date of onset, method of diagnosis and name, address and telephone number of physician.
When?

Cases or suspected cases of illness considered to be public health emergencies, outbreaks, exotic diseases and unusual group expressions of disease must be reported to the local health department of DSHS immediately. Other diseases for which there must be a quick public health response must be reported within one working day. All other conditions must be reported to the local health department or DSHS within one week.
